Who is Oliver Heldens? Well he is a 20-year-old Dutch dance music superstar. And it’s all happened in the blink of an eye.
It all started with the huge release of ‘Gecko’ on one of house music’s biggest labels, ‘Spinnin’’, in 2013. I know when I first heard that track I could not stop listening to it, was different to everything else at the time. He managed to gain a main-room sound that was all his own. ‘Gecko’ was then released with vocals from one of house music’s biggest vocalists, Becky Hill. That was released under the name ‘Gecko – Overdrive’. The track was again massive and became No. 1 in the UK. A big feat for an up and coming artist.
That year he also released a remix of ‘Animals’, by Martin Garrix, which also garnered widespread acclaim. That track is also totally massive and I knew then I had found a sound by a new producer that I really liked. I would watch out for every single release from Oliver Heldens!!
Since those mammoth releases we have seen Heldens collaborate with other big main-room artists including Sander Van Doorn, with ‘This’. Very similar to ‘Gecko’, but if something works then go with it!
On the back of ‘Gecko’ and his other earlier releases, Heldens has managed to secure DJ bookings at some of the biggest dance music festivals and clubs in the world, including Coachella, Tomorrowland, and Ministry of Sound. He is continuing to grow and a spot at the top of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ’s is surely not too far away.
I, for one love his sound and his latest releases, including ‘Melody’ prove that he is not a flash-in-the-pan or one hit wonder type of artist. Long may it continue!!
